I recently moved to the Pacific North West where I have a studio and time to work on a new series of large drawings. I am beginning a new stage of discovery; in a way I am reacquainting myself with the study of art, medium and my voice.
I am exploring composition, color, light, line, application of medium and surface; core classical art making ideas. I study past and contemporary art; in particular I am looking at the eras of early to mid century Modern artists because they expressed what they wanted by pushing boundaries of social acceptance. Modern artists were also grappling with a deep psychology of a dramatically changing world and their relationship to it. With my large drawings I am discovering more about this recurring subject of relationship in my own work.
While working, I often ponder the abstract notion of life on this planet and universes to the microcosm at the most indecipherable level. The relationship between the two can be fleeting, unrecognizable, imperceptible and becomes as ethereal as emotions or helium gas released into the air. Relationships are fundamental to our survival. Relationships are subjective through what I know and perceive as a human. My intention is to investigate and depict the complexities of relationships through my work.
I represent relationships by combining found images that resonate with me to portray duality, dignity, beauty or strength. I like the process of transforming the self interpreted narrative from the inspiration images into something more. The initial images becomes a launching off point for a deeper exploration of meaning and self in relation. The combining of multiple subjects makes the viewer focus on what is the underlying relationship and to ask why did the artist choose these subjects and put them together.
Thank you for viewing my work.
